Tafsir (Explanation):
When Musa (peace be upon him) stood before the sorcerers of Pharaoh, he gave them the choice to cast their spells first, saying: "No, you cast first." This was not a concession but a display of confidence and disdain for their tricks, and a way to let the truth and falsehood become clear before the eyes of the people. So they threw down their ropes and staffs, and through the power of their illusion and sorcery, those inanimate objects appeared to Musa as if they were snakes moving swiftly and vigorously. It was a terrifying spectacle, yet it was nothing but a mirage—an illusion that had no reality. Musa felt a natural fear in his heart, as any human would, but his faith in Allah remained unshaken, and he knew that the truth he carried would soon prevail over their falsehood.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This scene teaches us a profound lesson: the people of falsehood may appear strong and overwhelming, with tricks that dazzle the eyes and shake the heart. But their power is nothing but illusion—temporary, hollow, and destined to vanish. As believers, when we face trials or when falsehood seems to flourish around us, we must remember that Allah’s truth is the only reality that endures. The fear Musa felt was human, but his reliance on Allah turned that fear into victory. So, dear reader, when you see the "ropes and staffs" of this world—whether they are wealth, status, or deception—do not be deceived. Hold firm to your faith, for the One who turned Musa's staff into a serpent that swallowed their lies is still alive and able to support you. Trust Him, and He will make your truth manifest, no matter how great the illusion of falsehood may seem.
