Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أَوْجَسَ (awjasa): to feel or harbor something inwardly, to secretly sense within oneself.
  • خِيفَةً (kheefah): fear, apprehension, or dread.
(Musa): Prophet Moses, peace be upon him.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound moment of the confrontation between truth and falsehood, Prophet Moses, peace be upon him, had just invited the magicians of Pharaoh to cast their spells first, demonstrating his unwavering confidence in Allah’s support. Yet, when the magicians threw down their ropes and staffs, their powerful illusions made them appear as if they were slithering, moving serpents rushing toward him. The sheer scale and intensity of their sorcery struck a natural chord of fear within Moses’ heart—a purely human reaction, for he was a mortal man, not immune to the instincts of self-preservation. This fear, however, was not a sign of weak faith or doubt in Allah’s promise; rather, it was an instinctive response to a terrifying spectacle, as any person would feel when faced with a sudden, overwhelming threat. The verse captures this inner state with remarkable precision: Moses concealed this fear within himself, not allowing it to show on his face or in his demeanor, for his trust in Allah remained steadfast even as his human nature trembled.

This moment teaches us a beautiful and reassuring lesson: even the greatest prophets of Allah experienced natural human emotions like fear. They were not emotionless statues, but living, breathing servants of Allah who felt the weight of their circumstances. What distinguished them was not the absence of fear, but their ability to rise above it through reliance on Allah. When fear crept into Moses’ heart, he did not flee or falter; instead, he turned to his Lord, and Allah immediately responded with divine reassurance, as the following verses reveal. This is a profound reminder for every believer: it is not a sin to feel fear or weakness in the face of trials—what matters is how we respond. Do we let fear paralyze us, or do we channel it into a deeper dependence on Allah? Moses’ example shows us that true strength lies not in never feeling afraid, but in trusting Allah even when our hearts tremble. So, dear reader, when life’s challenges appear as terrifying serpents before you, remember that Allah is always near, ready to transform your fear into peace and your trials into triumph—if only you place your trust in Him, just as His beloved prophet Moses did.

📜 Verse 65-69 — Taha

They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."
He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].
And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.
Allah said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.
And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."
