Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Khuld (الْخُلْدَ): Eternal, everlasting life in this world without death.
- Afain mitta (أَفَإِن مِّتَّ): "If you die" — addressing the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), meaning if his appointed term ends and he passes away.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse delivers a profound and decisive truth: Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has never granted any human being — from the first prophet to the last — immortality in this worldly life. Every soul that has ever lived, from Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Moses, and from Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all), has tasted death or will taste it. The law of mortality is universal and unchangeable; it applies equally to prophets and ordinary people alike.
The verse then poses a rhetorical question that strikes at the heart of the disbelievers' false hopes: "If you die, O Muhammad, will they then live forever?" This question exposes the absurdity of their attitude. The pagans of Mecca hoped for the Prophet's death so they could return to their old ways, yet they themselves were subject to the very same fate — death. How could they imagine that the Messenger would die while they would remain immortal? This is an impossibility, for no human being has ever been granted eternal life in this world, and no one ever will be.
This verse also serves as a powerful reminder that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is a human being, not an immortal deity. His death — which indeed occurred — was part of Allah's divine decree, and his mission was completed before he departed from this world. The verse further indicates that even Al-Khidr (peace be upon him), who some claim is still alive, has died, for he was a human being and the law of mortality applies to all.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse and let it awaken your heart. If the noblest of creation — the prophets themselves — did not remain in this world, then what is this fleeting life we cling to so desperately? This world is but a temporary station, a bridge to the eternal abode. The One who created life and death has decreed that every soul shall taste death, and this decree is absolute.
Do not let your hopes rest on this transient world, for it will surely fade away. Instead, turn your heart to the Ever-Living who never dies, and prepare for the meeting with Him through sincere faith and righteous deeds. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lived, delivered the message, and passed away — but his legacy of guidance remains. Follow his path, and you will attain the true immortality: eternal bliss in the gardens of Paradise, where there is no death, no sorrow, and no end. That is the everlasting life worth striving for — a life in the presence of the Most Merciful, where the believers will dwell forever, enjoying what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever conceived.
