Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Khuliqa al-insanu min 'ajal: The human being was created with haste and impatience, meaning he is naturally inclined to rush matters and seek immediate results.
- Ayati: My signs, miracles, and punishments — here referring to the divine retribution that the disbelievers were impatiently demanding.
- Fala tasta'jilun: So do not ask Me to hasten it, do not be impatient for its arrival.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Exalted, informs us of a fundamental trait embedded within the very nature of the human being: haste. The human being is created with an innate tendency to rush, to want things to happen immediately, and to grow restless when outcomes are delayed. This is not a blameworthy trait in itself when channeled toward good, but it becomes problematic when humans demand that divine matters unfold according to their own limited timeline.
In this verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers of Quraysh who, in their arrogance and mockery, challenged the Prophet (peace be upon him) to bring the punishment of Allah upon them quickly. They said, "O Allah, if this is indeed the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring upon us a painful punishment" (Al-Anfal 8:32). They were impatient for the promise of divine justice to be fulfilled, thinking it would never come.
Allah responds to their haste by reminding them of their very nature — they were created from haste itself. Then He delivers a powerful warning: "I will show you My signs" — meaning, I will certainly bring upon you what you are so impatiently demanding. The punishment will come, but at a time of My choosing, not yours. And when it does come, you will wish you had never asked for it.
The verse carries a tone of both rebuke and reassurance. It rebukes the disbelievers for their mockery and impatience, and it reassures the believers that divine justice is certain — it may be delayed, but it will never be abandoned. Indeed, the fulfillment of this warning came at the Battle of Badr, where the disbelievers witnessed the very punishment they had once mocked and demanded.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect on the wisdom of this verse. Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not hasten punishment upon His servants — not because He is incapable, but because He grants respite for repentance and return to Him. How often do we, in our human weakness, wish for immediate results in all matters, forgetting that Allah's timing is perfect and His wisdom surpasses our understanding?
The believer is called to patience — patience in times of trial, patience in awaiting relief, and patience in trusting that Allah's promise is true. The hastiness that is part of our nature can either be our downfall, as it was for the disbelievers who demanded punishment, or it can be transformed into eager haste toward good deeds and sincere repentance.
So let us not be like those who demand signs and miracles before they believe. Rather, let us open our hearts to the signs that are already all around us — in the creation of the heavens and the earth, in the alternation of night and day, in the revelation of this magnificent Quran, and in the life of the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him). The greatest sign of all is that Allah has given us the opportunity to know Him, worship Him, and attain His mercy. Do not waste it in impatience and doubt. Hasten instead toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous.
