Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Kam (كَمْ): How much / how many — an interrogative used for questioning quantity.
- Labithtum (لَبِثْتُمْ): You remained / you stayed — referring to the duration of one's stay.
- Fi al-Ard (فِي الْأَرْضِ): On the earth — meaning in the worldly life, the life of this world.
- Adada Sineen (عَدَدَ سِنِينَ): The number of years — a specified count of years.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) tells us about the questioning that will take place on the Day of Judgment. The Almighty will ask the wretched people who are being punished in Hellfire: "How many years did you remain on the earth?" — meaning, how long did you live in the worldly life, enjoying its pleasures, eating, drinking, and pursuing your desires? How many years did you spend in this temporary abode, and how much of that precious time did you waste in disobedience to Allah, neglecting His commands and failing to worship Him as He deserves?
This question is not merely to seek information — for Allah knows everything — but rather it is a rebuke and a reproach. It is meant to make them realize how short their stay was in comparison to the eternal punishment they now face, and how they squandered that limited time in pursuits that brought them nothing but regret and loss. The question highlights the contrast between the fleeting nature of worldly life and the everlasting reality of the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound question. Your life on this earth is but a few years — perhaps sixty, seventy, or eighty years — compared to eternity. Yet these few years determine your eternal destiny. How are you spending them? Are you investing your days and nights in what pleases your Lord, or are you wasting them in heedlessness and distraction?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "There are two blessings which many people squander: good health and free time." (Reported by Al-Bukhari)
Every breath you take is a step closer to the Hereafter. Every day that passes is a page in your book of deeds that will never return. Do not wait until you stand before your Lord and are asked this very question — for on that Day, you will wish you had used every single moment in obedience to Allah, in seeking His pleasure, and in preparing for the eternal life that awaits you.
The people of Hellfire will answer this question, and their answer will be filled with regret. But you, my dear reader, still have the opportunity — right now, in this very moment — to change your course. Turn to Allah with sincere repentance, make the most of your remaining days, and let your life be a journey of faith, good deeds, and devotion. For the wise person is the one who realizes that this worldly life is merely a bridge to the eternal abode, and that the true success lies in pleasing Allah and attaining His Paradise.
