Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:

- Numidduhum – We extend, increase, or provide them with continuous support and provisions.
- Min maal – Of wealth and riches.
- Wa baneen – And children/sons.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse addresses a profound misconception held by those who disbelieve and turn away from the truth. They look at the wealth and children they have been given in this worldly life and assume that these blessings are a sign of Allah’s pleasure and approval of them—that they are being rewarded and honored for their status. They think, "If we were on the wrong path, why would we be given so much?"
Allah corrects this false assumption by posing a rhetorical question: Do they truly believe that the wealth and children We extend to them are a sign of goodness and honor for them? The answer is an emphatic "No." These worldly provisions are not a mark of divine favor; rather, they are a form of istidraj—a gradual leading astray. Allah grants them these blessings as a test and a trap, allowing them to become further engrossed in their arrogance and disobedience, so that their eventual reckoning is even more severe. They are being given rope to hang themselves, so to speak, while they remain heedless of the reality.
The verse highlights a crucial spiritual principle: worldly abundance is not necessarily a sign of divine pleasure. Many righteous people live with little, while many wrongdoers are given much. The true measure of Allah’s love is not in material wealth but in the ability to obey Him and the sweetness of faith in the heart. Yet, these people do not perceive this subtle truth—they are blinded by their immediate comforts and fail to see the bigger picture of their own destruction.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Do not be deceived by the glitter of this world, nor envy those who have been given abundance while they persist in disobedience. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, gives to both the believer and the disbeliever, but the purpose differs. For the believer, wealth is a means of gratitude and charity; for the disbeliever, it is a means of distraction and eventual ruin. Ponder this: if Allah loves a servant, He protects their heart, not necessarily their pockets. So turn to your Lord with humility, thank Him for every blessing, and never let the temporary comforts of this life make you forget the eternal life to come. The Qur'an is a mercy and a reminder—take heed before it is too late, and let your wealth and children be a source of goodness for you, not a cause of your downfall.
