Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rī’ (رِيعٍ): A high, elevated place or a raised mound of land.
- Āyah (آيَةً): Here it means a sign, landmark, or a towering structure built as a marker.
- Ta‘bathūn (تَعْبَثُونَ): To play, mock, or engage in frivolous, purposeless behaviour — specifically, to amuse yourselves by ridiculing others.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of the Prophet Hūd’s admonition to his people, the ‘Ād, who were blessed with immense strength and prosperity. Instead of using their power for good, they misused it in arrogance and vanity. Allah, through His Prophet, rebukes them with a rhetorical question: “Do you build, on every high place, a landmark, merely to amuse yourselves?”
The meaning is that they would construct tall, imposing buildings on elevated grounds — not for any genuine need, such as shelter or protection, but as a display of pride and as a means to look down upon passersby, mocking and ridiculing them. They treated the roads and pathways of people as stages for their mockery, turning their construction into a tool of arrogance and oppression. This was pure wastefulness and folly, for it brought them no benefit in this life — since such buildings served no practical purpose — nor in the Hereafter, as it earned them Allah’s displeasure.
The verse highlights a deeper spiritual ailment: the love of status, the desire to belittle others, and the heedlessness that comes from being absorbed in worldly grandeur. The ‘Ād thought their towering structures would grant them permanence, but they forgot that death is inevitable and that every soul will stand before its Lord.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. How often do we, too, build “towers” of pride in our hearts — seeking to elevate ourselves above others through wealth, status, or appearance? How often do we waste our God-given resources and abilities on things that only feed our egos, while neglecting what truly matters: our relationship with Allah, our character, and our service to humanity?
This verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder that life is not a playground for arrogance. Every blessing we possess — strength, wealth, time, and talent — is a trust from Allah. He loves to see us use these blessings in ways that benefit others, bring hearts together, and draw us closer to Him. The believer is humble, not haughty; constructive, not destructive; and mindful that every action will be weighed on the Day of Judgment.
So let us turn our hands to building what truly lasts: a legacy of kindness, a home of faith, and a heart that seeks Allah’s pleasure. For the structures of stone will crumble, but the deeds done sincerely for Allah will remain — a treasure that never fades. May Allah guide us all to use our blessings in ways that please Him, and protect us from the arrogance that destroyed nations before us.
