Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- بِمُعَذَّبِينَ — to be punished or tormented (in the Hereafter).
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, the disbelievers of old—who denied the message of their prophets—declare with arrogance and false confidence: "And we will not be punished." They believed that their way of life, which they claimed to be nothing more than the customs and traditions of their forefathers, would have no consequences. They rejected the warnings of the prophets about a Day of Judgment, a resurrection, and a reckoning. To them, life was only this world: they lived, they died, and that was the end of it all. They saw no possibility of being held accountable or suffering any punishment for their deeds, whether in this life or the next.
This statement reflects a deep spiritual blindness—a refusal to look beyond the immediate and the material. They closed their hearts to the signs of Allah in creation, to the voice of their own conscience, and to the truth brought by the messengers. They convinced themselves that their actions would go unanswered, and that no divine justice awaited them.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How dangerous is this illusion! The one who lives without the awareness of accountability drifts into heedlessness, and heedlessness is the gateway to ruin. But the believer knows that this world is not the end—it is a field of trial, and the harvest comes in the Hereafter. Allah, the All-Just, does not create in vain, nor does He leave His servants without purpose or consequence. The very fact that you feel a sense of right and wrong within you is a sign that there is a Judge. The very order of the universe—the sun, the moon, the seasons, the balance of life—testifies that nothing is left to chance.
So, dear reader, do not fall into the trap of those who say, "We will not be punished." Every soul will taste what it has earned. But the good news is that Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open until the last breath. Turn to Him now, before the moment when the curtain is lifted and the truth becomes undeniable. Let your life be one of awareness, gratitude, and sincere striving—for that is the path of peace in this world and the key to eternal bliss in the next.
