Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Maridtu (مَرِضْتُ): I fell ill or became sick.
- Yashfini (يَشْفِينِ): He cures me, heals me, and restores me to health.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) continues his profound address to his people, teaching them the essence of true monotheism. He declares that when he falls ill, it is Allah alone who cures him. This statement is not merely a medical observation—it is a declaration of complete reliance on Allah in every aspect of life. Ibrahim acknowledges that illness is a part of human existence, a test from Allah, but the cure, the healing, and the restoration of health come solely from Allah’s mercy and power. No medicine, no doctor, and no effort can bring healing unless Allah wills it. This is a lesson in tawheed (the oneness of Allah): the heart must remain attached to Allah in times of sickness and in times of health, recognizing that He is the ultimate Healer (Ash-Shafi).
The verse also reflects the beautiful humility of Ibrahim—he attributes the illness to himself ("when I fall ill") but attributes the cure entirely to Allah ("it is He who heals me"). This teaches us that while we may experience hardship, we should never lose hope, for Allah’s mercy is always near, and His power to heal is absolute.
A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:
This verse is a gentle reminder for every believer to turn to Allah in times of difficulty. When you are sick, do not despair—your cure is in Allah’s hands. He is the One who created you, and He is the One who knows exactly what ails you and how to heal you. So, while you seek medical treatment, never forget to supplicate to Allah, for He is the source of all healing. This profound trust in Allah brings peace to the heart and strengthens your faith. Let the example of Ibrahim inspire you: his reliance on Allah was not passive but active, filled with gratitude and hope. And remember, every illness is an opportunity to draw closer to Allah, to purify your soul, and to realize that your ultimate well-being lies in His hands. So, turn to Him with a sincere heart, and He will never abandon you.
