Surah Ash-Shu'ara — Verse 88

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a vivid scene from the Day of Judgment — a day when all that a person once relied upon in this worldly life becomes utterly useless. On that day, no amount of accumulated wealth, no matter how vast, and no number of sons, no matter how mighty or numerous, will be able to intercede, protect, or rescue anyone from the reckoning of Allah.

In this life, people often place their trust in their riches and their children. Wealth is seen as a shield against hardship, and sons are seen as a source of support, defense, and legacy. But on that awesome Day, all of these worldly securities will collapse. The rich man will find his gold and silver worthless, and the father will find his sons powerless to shield him from even a moment of Allah’s judgment. Neither treasures nor tribes, neither bank accounts nor bloodlines, will carry any weight on the scales of justice.

The only thing that will benefit a person on that Day is what they sent forth from this world — their faith, their righteous deeds, and a heart that is pure and sound, free from shirk (associating partners with Allah), hypocrisy, and moral corruption. As the verse that follows confirms, the only one who will be saved is the one who comes to Allah with a sound and sincere heart.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. How much of your time and energy is spent accumulating wealth and investing in your children’s worldly success, while neglecting the state of your own heart? The Day is coming when every material asset will vanish into insignificance. What will remain is your relationship with Allah, your sincerity, and the good deeds you performed for His sake alone.

Do not wait until that Day to realize that your money and your family could not help you. Build now a treasure that will never perish — a heart devoted to Allah, a life lived in obedience to Him, and a legacy of righteousness that will speak for you when nothing else can. This is the true success, and this is the only investment that will yield eternal returns. May Allah grant us all a sound heart and make us among those who are saved on that momentous Day.
