Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Salīm (سليم): Sound, whole, free from defects. In this context, it refers to a heart purified from all spiritual ailments—free from shirk (polytheism), hypocrisy, and moral corruption.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse comes as a continuation of the previous one, where Allah describes the Day of Judgment—a day when neither wealth nor children will avail anyone. Then comes this exception: *"Except for those who come to Allah with a sound heart."*
This is an exclusive exception, meaning that while wealth and offspring generally provide no benefit on that Day, there is one group that will be saved: those who present themselves before their Lord with a heart that is *salīm*—a heart cleansed of shirk, hypocrisy, arrogance, and every form of spiritual disease. Such a heart is devoted solely to Allah, untainted by false beliefs or corrupt intentions.
The sound heart is one that has been purified through sincere faith, righteous deeds, and constant remembrance of Allah. It is a heart that recognizes its Creator, submits to His will, and remains steadfast upon the path of truth. For such a person, their wealth—if spent in Allah's cause—and their children—if they pray for them—may become sources of benefit, but ultimately, it is the purity of the heart that secures salvation.
This verse carries a profound message for every believer: the true investment for the Hereafter is not in accumulating worldly possessions or raising large families, but in cultivating a heart that is sound, sincere, and devoted to Allah. A heart that is free from the love of this world that overrides obedience to Allah, free from envy, hatred, and pride, and free from any trace of associating partners with Allah.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, imagine standing before your Lord on that tremendous Day. Neither your bank accounts, nor your properties, nor your influential connections will speak for you. The only thing that will matter is the state of your heart. So ask yourself: is my heart sound? Is it free from the diseases of envy, arrogance, and attachment to this fleeting world? Have I purified it through sincere repentance, consistent worship, and genuine love for Allah and His creation?
The good news is that it is never too late. Every day is an opportunity to cleanse your heart, to turn back to Allah, and to rebuild your relationship with Him. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to say: *"O Allah, purify my heart from hypocrisy, and my actions from showing off."* Make this your daily supplication, and strive to be among those who will come to Allah with a sound heart—for they are the ones who will truly succeed on that Day when nothing else will avail.
