Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "iddāraka" (ادّارَكَ): Followed in succession, became complete and settled.
- "ʿamūn" (عَمُونَ): Blind — not in the eyes, but blind in insight and perception; their hearts and minds are veiled from the truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the disbelievers who denied the Hereafter and the Day of Resurrection. Allah says: "Nay, their knowledge has become complete regarding the Hereafter" — meaning, has their knowledge of the unseen and the exact timing of the Hour reached such perfection that they can now affirm or deny it with certainty? Certainly not! They have no such knowledge. In fact, they are in doubt and confusion about the Hereafter in this worldly life, uncertain whether it will truly come. And beyond that doubt, their hearts are utterly blind to it — they cannot perceive its reality, nor do they reflect upon the signs that point to it, such as the revival of dead earth after rain, the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the resurrection of bones.
The verse uses the rhetorical device of progressive negation: first, it negates their claim to certain knowledge; second, it confirms their state of doubt; and third, it exposes the deeper reality — that their blindness is not physical but spiritual, a blindness of the heart that prevents them from seeing the truth even when it is clear.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder this: the disbelievers of old were not lacking in intelligence or reasoning — they simply refused to use their God-given faculties to seek the truth. Their doubt was not born of genuine inquiry, but of arrogance and attachment to worldly desires. How many signs do we see every day that point to the Hereafter? The alternation of night and day, the death of plants in winter and their revival in spring, the sleep that resembles death and the waking that resembles resurrection — all of these are living proofs that the One who created all this is more than capable of bringing the dead back to life.
Do not let your heart be blind, dear reader. Open your eyes to the truth of the Qur'an and the message of Islam. The Hereafter is not a distant myth — it is as certain as the dawn that follows the night. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called people to this truth with wisdom and compassion, and those who responded found peace in their hearts and clarity in their lives. Embrace this truth before the Day comes when every soul shall see its deeds — for on that Day, no doubt will remain, and no blindness will excuse. The time to see clearly is now, in this life, through the light of faith.
