Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mawtā (الْمَوْتَىٰ): The dead; here referring to those whose hearts are spiritually dead due to disbelief and stubbornness.
  • Al-Ṣumm (الصُّمَّ): The deaf; those who are unable to hear, metaphorically referring to those who refuse to listen to the truth.
  • Al-Duʿāʾ (الدُّعَاءَ): The call or invitation; here, the call to monotheism and the message of Islam.
  • Wallaw Mudbirīn (وَلَّوْا مُدْبِرِينَ): When they turn away and retreat, showing rejection and avoidance.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Messenger of Allah, you are being reassured and comforted by your Lord. You are not responsible for the guidance of those whose hearts have become hardened and sealed by their own persistent rejection of the truth. Just as you cannot make the physically dead hear your voice, you cannot make those who are spiritually dead—whose hearts have been overtaken by disbelief—comprehend or accept your call. Similarly, you cannot make the deaf hear your invitation, especially when they turn their backs and walk away in arrogance, refusing to even consider what you say. A deaf person who faces you might catch a glimpse of your gestures, but one who turns away completely leaves no room for communication whatsoever.

This verse draws a powerful metaphor: the disbelievers who are entrenched in their denial are likened to the dead and the deaf. They hear the words, but their hearts do not absorb them, and their minds do not reflect upon them. The Prophet ﷺ delivered the message with utmost clarity and sincerity, but guidance rests solely in the Hands of Allah. He guides whom He wills and leaves whom He wills to stray, in accordance with His infinite wisdom and justice.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It reminds us that the duty of a Muslim, especially those who call others to Allah, is to convey the message with wisdom, kindness, and patience—not to force results. The outcome is always with Allah. So do not grieve when you see people turning away from the truth, nor let despair creep into your heart. Your reward lies in your sincere effort, not in the response of others.

At the same time, this verse is a wake-up call for those who are alive yet act like the dead—those who hear the truth but refuse to listen, who see the signs but choose to ignore them. Do not let your heart become a grave for the truth. Open your ears, soften your heart, and respond to the call of your Creator before the day comes when no call will benefit you, and no return will be possible. Allah’s mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open until the very last moment—so hasten to it, and let your heart be alive with faith, hearing the call of truth and answering it with love and submission.

📜 Verse 78-82 — An-Naml

Indeed, your Lord will judge between them by His [wise] judgement. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
So rely upon Allah; indeed, you are upon the clear truth.
Indeed, you will not make the dead hear, nor will you make the deaf hear the call when they have turned their backs retreating.
And you cannot guide the blind away from their error. You will only make hear those who believe in Our verses so they are Muslims [submitting to Allah].
And when the word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them, [saying] that the people were, of Our verses, not certain [in faith].
