Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Those who were given a share of the Book" — refers to the Jewish scholars who had received a portion of the Torah and knew of its teachings.
- "They are called to the Book of Allah" — meaning they are invited to judge by what Allah has revealed, whether the Torah or the Qur'an.
- "Then a group of them turns away" — a faction among them rejects and withdraws from the judgment.
- "While they are averse" — they turn their backs on the truth, refusing to accept it.
Explanation of the Verse:
Have you not seen, O Prophet, the astonishing state of those who were given a share of the Book — the Jewish scholars who knew from their Torah the truth of your prophethood and the message you brought? They are called to the Book of Allah to settle their disputes and judge between them with fairness and justice. Yet, when the judgment does not align with their whims and desires, a group of them turns away in rejection, refusing to submit to the divine ruling. This is despite their claim to believe in the Book and their expectation that others should follow it. Their behavior reveals a deep contradiction: they call others to the truth but flee from it themselves when it opposes their interests. The most fitting response for those who claim to follow a divine scripture would be to hasten toward its judgment, not to retreat from it in arrogance and aversion.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every sincere soul to pause and reflect: how can one claim to love Allah's guidance yet turn away when it challenges personal desires? The Qur'an and the authentic teachings of Islam are a mercy and a light for humanity. They call us to justice, truth, and inner peace. When you submit to Allah's judgment — even when it goes against your wishes — you are not losing; you are gaining dignity, wisdom, and closeness to your Creator. Let this be a reminder for us all: the heart that welcomes Allah's word with humility is the heart that finds true success. Do not be like those who turned away while knowing the truth; instead, be among those who embrace it wholeheartedly, for Allah's guidance is the path to everlasting happiness in this life and the Hereafter.
