Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Kitab (الكتاب): Here, it refers to writing/script, the ability to read and write.
  • Al-Hikmah (الحكمة): Wisdom, sound judgment, and correctness in speech and action.
  • At-Tawrah (التوراة): The Torah, the divine revelation sent to Prophet Moses (peace be upon him).
  • Al-Injeel (الإنجيل): The Gospel, the divine revelation that would be sent to Jesus (peace be upon him).

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this blessed verse, Allah Almighty tells us of the great favors He bestowed upon His Prophet Jesus, son of Mary (peace be upon him). Allah taught him the art of writing, which was a rare skill in his time, and granted him profound wisdom—the ability to discern truth, make sound judgments, and speak and act with excellence. This wisdom was not merely intellectual; it was a divine light guiding his heart and soul.

Furthermore, Allah taught him the Torah, the sacred scripture revealed to Prophet Moses (peace be upon him), so that he might confirm its truths and uphold its laws. And Allah taught him the Gospel, the new revelation that would be sent down upon him, containing guidance, light, and mercy for humanity. Through this comprehensive divine education, Jesus was equipped to be a complete prophet—one who mastered the previous revelation, received the new one, and possessed the wisdom to apply both in perfect harmony.

This verse beautifully illustrates how Allah prepares His chosen messengers. He endowed Jesus with knowledge of the past scriptures and the future revelation, making him a bridge between the law of Moses and the message of grace. It also highlights the honor and dignity Allah granted to Jesus, elevating him among the prophets and confirming his noble mission.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse invites us to reflect on the greatness of divine knowledge. Just as Allah taught His prophets, He has given us the greatest gift of all—the Quran, a book that contains all that we need for success in this life and the next. When we study the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we are following in the footsteps of the prophets, seeking the same wisdom and guidance that Allah granted to Jesus. Let this inspire you to deepen your connection with the Quran, for it is the ultimate source of wisdom, and through it, you can attain the same divine light that illuminated the hearts of the prophets. Indeed, the path to true knowledge and lasting peace lies in embracing the final revelation, which confirms and completes all that came before it.
