And when our verses are recited to him, he turns away arrogantly as if he had not heard them, as if there was in his ears deafness. So give him tidings of a painful punishment.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • تُتْلَىٰ (are recited): Are read aloud with clarity and precision.
  • وَلَّىٰ (turns away): Withdraws and distances himself deliberately.
  • مُسْتَكْبِرًا (in arrogance): With pride and haughtiness, refusing to submit.
  • وَقْرًا (heaviness/deafness): A heavy blockage or deafness in the ears that prevents hearing.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the verses of the Quran are recited to such a person—verses filled with guidance, mercy, and the light of truth—he does not listen with an open heart. Instead, he turns away in arrogance, as if he had never heard them at all. His behavior is as though there is a heavy deafness in his ears, blocking every word from reaching his mind or soul. He refuses to ponder, reflect, or accept, not because the truth is unclear, but because his pride has sealed his heart.

To such a person, the Quran delivers a striking and severe message: give him the "good news" of a painful, agonizing punishment. The word "good news" here is used ironically and as a form of rebuke—because the only news that awaits him is the torment of the Fire on the Day of Judgment, a punishment that will be felt deeply and without relief.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and look at your own heart. When the verses of Allah are recited, do you turn away, or do you lean in with humility and longing? The Quran is not a burden; it is a healing for what is in the chests. It is a light that illuminates the darkest paths. Do not let arrogance—the very trait that caused Satan to be expelled from Paradise—become your companion. Open your ears, open your heart, and let the words of your Lord transform you. For the same Quran that brings glad tidings to the believers is a warning to those who turn away. Choose the path of humility today, and you will find peace in this life and eternal bliss in the next.

📜 Verse 5-9 — Luqman

Those are on [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.
And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.
And when our verses are recited to him, he turns away arrogantly as if he had not heard them, as if there was in his ears deafness. So give him tidings of a painful punishment.
Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds - for them are the Gardens of Pleasure.
Wherein they abide eternally; [it is] the promise of Allah [which is] truth. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
