Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fa-a'rid (فَأَعْرِضْ): Turn away from, disregard, or leave them alone without engaging in further argument or confrontation.
- Wa-ntazir (وَانتَظِرْ): Wait, anticipate, or await — referring to waiting for Allah's decree and promise.
- Muntazirūn (مُنتَظِرُونَ): Those who are waiting or expecting — referring to the disbelievers who await the downfall of the Prophet and the believers.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger of Allah, after you have delivered the message clearly and they have persisted in their denial and arrogance, turn away from these polytheists. Do not let their mockery and rejection grieve you, and do not waste your energy in futile debate with those who have sealed their hearts against the truth. Your duty was to convey — and you have conveyed perfectly. Now, leave their affair to Allah.
And wait — for Allah's promise is true and certain. Wait for the victory He has guaranteed you, for the help that will surely come, and for the humiliation that awaits them. Indeed, they too are waiting — but they wait for your downfall, for your failure, for the extinction of this call. They plot and scheme, anticipating that this light will be extinguished and this word will fade away.
But how wrong they are! They wait for death and defeat, while you wait for honor and triumph. And when the two waits meet, it will become clear who was upon the truth and who was upon falsehood. Allah fulfilled His promise — He granted His Messenger victory, elevated His word, and humiliated the disbelievers in this very world before the punishment of the Hereafter. Such is the way of Allah with those who reject His messengers.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this profound verse. The disbelievers of Makkah were certain that Islam would perish — yet today, the call of Muhammad ﷺ has reached every corner of the earth. Their waiting ended in disgrace, while the waiting of the believers ended in glory. This is the eternal sunnah (way) of Allah: truth prevails, falsehood perishes. So hold firm to your faith, dear Muslim, and wait with beautiful patience — for Allah's promise is never broken. Whatever trials you face today, know that the end is for the righteous, and the help of Allah is near.
