Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿAjūz (عَجُوزًا): An old, elderly woman — specifically referring to Prophet Lot's wife.
  • Ghābirīn (الْغَابِرِينَ): Those who remain behind or stay — in this context, those who remained in the punishment and were destroyed with the disbelieving people.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse continues the story of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him), highlighting the precise and just nature of Allah's decree. When Allah commanded the angels to destroy the wicked people of Lot's town for their grave sins and corruption, He granted salvation to Lot and his entire family — with one exception: his wife. She was an old woman who had remained in disbelief, sharing the same corrupt beliefs and attitudes as her people, even though she lived in the household of a prophet.

Her exclusion from the rescue was not arbitrary but a direct consequence of her own choice. She had aligned herself with the wrongdoers in heart and action, and thus she was counted among the "ghābirīn" — those who stayed behind to face the punishment. She perished with the rest of the disbelieving nation, as her fate was sealed by her own rejection of the truth that her husband had tirelessly conveyed.

This verse carries a profound lesson: salvation is not inherited by mere association with righteous people. Being the wife, child, or relative of a believer does not guarantee deliverance unless one personally embraces faith and lives by it. Every soul is accountable for its own deeds, and no one can intercede for another on the Day of Judgment without Allah's permission.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful and just is Allah's way! He does not punish anyone unjustly, nor does He save anyone without merit. The story of Lot's wife serves as a timeless reminder that faith is a personal journey — a treasure you must nurture in your own heart. Your lineage, your family name, or your proximity to good people cannot save you if your own heart is empty of submission to Allah.

So, dear reader, look within yourself today. Are you building your own relationship with Allah, or are you relying on the righteousness of others around you? The doors of repentance are open, and Allah's mercy is vast — but the choice to walk through those doors is yours alone. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who are saved, not by association, but by sincere faith and righteous action.
