Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yunus (يونس): Prophet Jonah, peace be upon him, the noble messenger sent to the people of Nineveh.
  • Min al-Mursalin (من المرسلين): Among the messengers whom Allah chose and honored with His divine message.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, the Exalted, declares in this verse that His servant and prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him, was indeed one of the chosen messengers. This is a great honor and a testament to his lofty rank among the prophets. Allah sent him to his people in Nineveh to call them to worship Allah alone, to warn them of the consequences of their disobedience, and to give them glad tidings of reward for their faith and righteousness.

The verse comes as part of a series of divine affirmations about the prophets, reassuring the believers that Allah’s guidance has always been continuous through His messengers. Yunus was not an ordinary man; he was a man of immense patience, devotion, and sincerity, though his story includes a moment of human weakness when he left his people in anger before Allah’s permission—a lesson in humility and repentance that Allah later turned into a profound teaching for all of humanity.

This brief mention of Yunus in the Qur’an serves as a reminder that no matter how difficult the mission or how trying the circumstances, Allah’s messengers were always under His care and protection. Even when Yunus found himself in the depths of the sea, swallowed by a whale, and in utter darkness, he called out to his Lord, and Allah responded to his supplication. This shows us that Allah never abandons His sincere servants, and that repentance and turning back to Him is always the path to salvation.

A Da’wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this verse and the story it introduces. Allah chose Yunus and made him a messenger—not because he was perfect, but because he was sincere and willing to return to Allah after his mistake. This is a powerful message for every one of us: you do not need to be flawless to be beloved to Allah; you only need to be truthful in your turning to Him. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah’s mercy embraces all who call upon Him with a sincere heart. Just as Yunus was saved from the darkness of the sea, you too can be saved from the darkness of sin and despair by turning to your Creator. Let this verse inspire you to strengthen your connection with Allah, to trust in His plan, and to never lose hope in His mercy—for He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
