Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- أَبَقَ (abaqa): To flee, escape, or run away — specifically used here to describe a servant fleeing from his master or duty.
- الْفُلْكِ (al-fulk): The ship or vessel.
- الْمَشْحُونِ (al-mashhoon): Filled to capacity, laden, or overloaded — referring to a ship crowded with passengers and cargo.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse takes us back to a critical moment in the life of Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him — a moment of human weakness that Allah, in His infinite mercy, turned into a profound lesson for all of humanity. The verse says: "When he fled to the laden ship."
Yunus (peace be upon him) was a noble messenger sent to his people, calling them to worship Allah alone. He endured their rejection and stubbornness with patience for a long time. But when his people persisted in their disbelief and he saw no sign of their acceptance, he became angry and frustrated. In that state of human emotion — which every person can relate to — he made a decision that was not sanctioned by his Lord: he left his people without Allah's explicit permission, and he headed toward the sea.
He boarded a ship that was already filled to its maximum capacity with passengers, goods, and provisions. This was not an ordinary journey; it was a flight from his responsibility, driven by anger and impatience. Yet, in the divine plan, this very act of fleeing became the gateway to one of the most beautiful stories of repentance, mercy, and divine rescue in the Quran.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and reflect on this scene. Here is a prophet of Allah — a man chosen by the Creator Himself — and yet he experienced moments of weakness, frustration, and even a hasty decision that he later regretted. If this can happen to a prophet, then how much more can it happen to us in our daily lives? We all make mistakes; we all act out of anger or impatience at times. But the beauty of Islam is that it never leaves us in despair. The story of Yunus (peace be upon him) teaches us that no matter how far we run, Allah's mercy is always greater than our mistakes. The very ship that carried him away from his duty became the vessel through which Allah tested him, purified him, and ultimately brought him back — not just to his people, but to a higher station of closeness to his Lord.
So, whenever you find yourself overwhelmed by anger, frustration, or a desire to escape your responsibilities, remember this verse. Remember that the solution is not to flee, but to turn back to Allah in humility and patience. And if you have already made a mistake, do not despair — for Allah's door of repentance is open until the very last moment of your life. The same Allah who rescued Yunus from the depths of the sea and the darkness of the whale's belly is ready to rescue you from the depths of your own trials, if only you call upon Him with a sincere heart.
