Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Fasāhama" (فَسَاهَمَ): He drew lots or cast lots with others; derived from "sahm" (arrow/portion), referring to the ancient practice of drawing arrows to decide a matter.
- "Al-Mudḥaḍīn" (الْمُدْحَضِينَ): Those who were overcome, defeated, or proven wrong; those whose lot was cast out and thus lost the draw.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the story of Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him, who had fled from his people in anger after they rejected his call, without Allah’s permission. He boarded a ship, but the sea became violent and the vessel was overloaded, threatening to sink. In such desperate circumstances, the passengers agreed to cast lots to determine who would be thrown overboard to lighten the load and save the rest. The lot fell upon Yunus—not once, but repeatedly—and he was among those who were overcome by the draw, meaning he lost the casting and was singled out to be cast into the sea. This was not a random misfortune; rather, it was a divine decree from Allah, Who had willed this trial for His prophet to purify him, teach him patience, and prepare him for the greater miracle that was to follow—being swallowed by the great fish and saved through his sincere repentance.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: when we turn away from Allah’s guidance and rely on our own plans, even the most ordinary events—like a ship’s journey—can become a means of trial. Yet, Allah’s mercy is always near. Yunus, peace be upon him, was a noble prophet, but his momentary lapse in patience led him into a hardship that ultimately brought him closer to his Lord. When he cried out from the depths of darkness, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers" (21:87), Allah answered him and saved him. This teaches us that no matter how far we stray or how deep our trials, sincere repentance and turning back to Allah can transform our calamities into blessings. Let this story inspire you to never despair of Allah’s mercy, and to always trust that His wisdom surpasses our understanding—for after every hardship, there is ease, and after every storm, there is a shore of salvation.
