Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Turaban" (تُرَابًا): Dust or soil — referring to the state of the body after death and decomposition.
- "ʿIẓāman" (عِظَامًا): Bones — specifically, dried and decayed bones that have crumbled over time.
- "Lamabʿūthūn" (لَمَبْعُوثُونَ): Surely raised up or resurrected — brought back to life after death.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse captures the mocking words of the disbelievers who rejected the message of resurrection. They said: "When we have died and become dust and decayed bones, will we really be raised up again?" Their question was not a sincere inquiry but a sarcastic denial — they found the idea of life after death utterly impossible and absurd. They could not conceive how a body that had turned to dust and scattered bones could be reassembled and brought back to life.
Their statement reflects a deep spiritual blindness. They looked at the physical reality of death and decomposition and concluded that resurrection was impossible, forgetting that the very One who created them from nothing — from a drop of fluid — is fully capable of recreating them from dust. The One who gave life the first time can certainly give it again. Their amazement at the possibility of resurrection was misplaced, for the power of Allah knows no limits, and His ability to restore life is as easy as His ability to create it in the first place.
This verse also carries a gentle reminder for every reader: do not be like those who measure Allah's power by their own limited understanding. The resurrection is not only possible — it is a certainty that will come to pass, and every soul will stand before its Lord to be held accountable for its deeds.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this: if you can see the spring return to a barren land, bringing forth life after death, then why do you doubt the One who does this every year before your very eyes? The One who revives the earth after its death is the very One who will revive the bodies from their graves. Let this verse awaken your heart to the reality of the Hereafter, and let it fill you with hope and awe — hope for the mercy of your Lord, and awe of standing before Him. Do not waste this life in denial, for the Day of Resurrection is nearer to you than you think. Prepare for it with sincere faith and righteous deeds, and you will find that the very resurrection you once doubted will be the moment of your ultimate success or loss.
