Word Meanings:
- فَرَاغَ (Faraagha): He turned or went quietly and stealthily, slipping away unnoticed.
- آلِهَتِهِمْ (Aalihatihim): Their gods — meaning the idols and statues they worshipped instead of Allah.
- أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ (Ala ta'kuloon): "Will you not eat?" — a rhetorical question posed in mockery and rebuke.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Abraham (peace be upon him) had confronted his people and they had turned away from his call, he seized a moment when they were distracted — during one of their festivals — and quietly slipped away to the place where their idols were kept. There, he found the idols adorned with food that the people had placed before them as offerings, believing these lifeless stones could benefit or harm them.
Standing before these helpless statues, Abraham addressed them with sharp, ironic mockery, saying: "Will you not eat?" — pointing to the food set before them. He then followed this with another question: "What is the matter with you that you do not speak?" The idols, of course, remained silent — they could neither eat, nor speak, nor defend themselves. Through this powerful scene, Abraham exposed the absurdity of worshipping beings that are utterly incapable of even the most basic acts of life.
This verse beautifully illustrates Abraham's wisdom and courage. He did not merely reject falsehood in his heart; he actively challenged it with logic, wit, and bold action. His approach teaches us that truth must be proclaimed with confidence, and that falsehood — no matter how deeply rooted in society — can be dismantled through clear reasoning and sincere faith.
Dear reader, reflect on this scene: how can a human being bow down to a statue that cannot even feed itself? How can one place hope in a creation that is weaker than its own worshipper? Abraham's question echoes through time, inviting every soul to free itself from the chains of blind imitation and to turn with a pure heart to the One True God — the Living, the Self-Sustaining, the Provider of all. This is the essence of Islam: total submission to Allah alone, the only One worthy of worship, who hears, sees, speaks, and answers those who call upon Him.
