Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Ajr" (أجر): Reward, payment, or compensation given in return for a service.
  • "Al-Mutakallifin" (المتكلفين): Those who pretend or claim something without basis, who fabricate words or deeds, or who burden themselves with what they have not been commanded to do.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger, say clearly to these polytheists from your people: "I do not ask you for any reward or payment for conveying this message of guidance and calling you to the truth. I seek nothing from you — neither wealth, nor status, nor any worldly gain. My only motive is your salvation and your happiness in this life and the Hereafter."

And say: "Nor am I one of those who pretend or fabricate things on their own accord. I do not bring you words from myself, nor do I claim prophethood falsely, nor do I add to or subtract from what has been revealed to me. I merely follow what is inspired to me from my Lord, and I deliver to you exactly what I have been commanded to deliver — no more, no less."

This verse carries a profound lesson in sincerity and integrity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was not a merchant seeking profit, nor a claimant seeking fame, nor a poet seeking admiration. He was a pure, honest messenger who endured hardship, persecution, and rejection — all without asking for a single penny in return. His only reward was with Allah, the Lord of all worlds.

This is the hallmark of true prophethood and sincere calling: complete detachment from worldly gains and absolute submission to the divine command. Reflect, dear reader — when the message is pure and the caller is sincere, the heart finds peace, and the truth becomes crystal clear. This is the beauty of Islam: a religion that calls you to goodness without asking for anything in return except that you succeed and find eternal happiness.
