Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Kitab (الْكِتَابَ): The Book — referring to the Qur'an and all divinely revealed scriptures.
- Al-Mizan (الْمِيزَانَ): The Balance — meaning justice, fairness, and equity in all matters.
- As-Sa'ah (السَّاعَةَ): The Hour — the Day of Resurrection and the establishment of the Final Judgment.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah — alone, with no partner — is the One who sent down the Book (the Qur'an, and all prior scriptures) with absolute truth, containing commands, prohibitions, and guidance that are all perfectly just and free from falsehood. He also sent down the Balance — meaning justice — so that people may judge between one another with fairness and equity, and so that they may weigh their words, deeds, and interactions on the scale of truth.
The verse then turns to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and to all who hear this message: "And what will make you realize that perhaps the Hour is near?" This is a gentle yet profound rhetorical question, stirring the heart to reflect. The Hour — the Day when every soul will be resurrected and held accountable for what it earned — may be far in human perception, but in reality, it is close. Every coming thing is near, and the life of this world is but a fleeting moment compared to the everlasting Hereafter.
The message here is one of urgency and hope: urgency, because we do not know when that Hour will strike, so we must hasten to righteous deeds and justice; and hope, because Allah's sending of the Book and the Balance is a mercy — He did not leave us in darkness, but gave us the light of revelation and the standard of justice to guide our paths.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this magnificent truth: the Creator of the heavens and the earth did not abandon you to confusion. He sent down His Book as a lamp for your heart and His justice as a scale for your conduct. And He reminds you that the Hour is near — not to frighten you into despair, but to awaken you from heedlessness and invite you to return to Him. Every breath you take is a step toward that meeting with your Lord. So let this verse be a turning point: embrace the Qur'an as your guide, embody justice in your dealings, and prepare for that Day which is closer than you think. Indeed, the best preparation is sincere repentance, righteous action, and love for your Creator — for He is the Most Merciful, and His door is always open to those who seek Him.
