Key Words and Phrases:
- "Man khalaqahum" (مَن خَلَقَهُمْ): Who created them?
- "Fa-annā yu'fakūn" (فَأَنَّى يُؤْفَكُونَ): How are they turned away/deceived? The verb *yu'fakūn* means to be turned aside, diverted, or deluded from the truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to pose a simple yet decisive question to the polytheists of Makkah: "Who created you?" The answer they would inevitably give — without hesitation or doubt — is "Allah." They acknowledged that Allah alone is the Creator of the heavens, the earth, and all living beings. This was not a matter of debate for them; it was an ingrained truth in their hearts.
Yet, despite this clear confession of Allah's exclusive creative power, they turned away from worshipping Him alone and instead associated partners with Him — idols, stones, and deities that could neither create nor provide for them. They recognized the Creator but refused to worship Him exclusively. They admitted His sovereignty over creation yet directed their devotion to false gods.
Allah then poses the rhetorical question: "How are they turned away?" — meaning, how is it that after acknowledging this undeniable truth, they are so easily deluded and diverted from the worship of the One True God? What sorcery of falsehood has blinded their hearts to such a degree that they contradict their own admission? This question is a powerful indictment of their illogical stance and a call to reflect on the inconsistency of their beliefs.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and ponder this verse. These polytheists knew Allah was their Creator, yet they strayed. How many of us today claim to believe in Allah, yet our hearts and actions are far from His obedience? The fitrah (innate nature) within every human being testifies to the existence of Allah — it is a natural, untaught recognition. The universe itself, with its perfect order, points to its Maker.
Let this verse be a reminder that acknowledging Allah's existence is not enough. True faith requires that we direct our worship, love, hope, and fear to Him alone. Let us not be like those who know the truth but turn away from it. Instead, let us be among those who, upon recognizing their Creator, submit to Him wholeheartedly, for He is the One who created us, sustains us, and will return us to Him.
The Qur'an repeatedly invites us to use our intellect. If you know that Allah created you, then why would you turn to anyone other than Him for help, guidance, or salvation? The answer is clear: worship belongs to the Creator alone. Embrace this truth with a sincere heart, and you will find peace, purpose, and the ultimate success in this life and the Hereafter.
