Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Aʿṭā (وَأَعْطَىٰ): He gave, bestowed, or offered.
- Qalīlan (قَلِيلًا): A small amount, little, or something insignificant in quantity.
- Akdā (وَأَكْدَىٰ): He stopped, withheld, or cut off (his giving). The root refers to a well-digger who hits solid rock and can no longer draw water, symbolizing the cessation of generosity.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to describe the person who turns away from Allah’s guidance—the one who was mentioned in the preceding verses as one who believes and then disbelieves. Here, Allah reveals another trait of such a person: he gives a little of his wealth (perhaps in charity or to please others), but then he stops abruptly, withholding further giving due to his miserly nature. The word *akdā* paints a vivid picture: like a man digging a well who reaches a hard, impenetrable layer of rock and abandons the effort, this person’s generosity is short-lived and superficial. He does not sustain his good deeds, nor does he follow through with sincerity. Despite this, he boasts and praises himself, claiming to be righteous—yet his actions betray his words.
This verse is a powerful reminder that true faith is not a fleeting gesture or a token act of kindness. It is a consistent, sincere commitment that reflects a heart connected to Allah. The one who gives a little and then stops, while still self-justifying, exposes a deeper spiritual ailment: a lack of trust in Allah’s provision and a failure to understand that wealth is a trust from Him.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to examine your own giving. Do you give only when it is easy, or do you persist even when it costs you? Allah loves the one who gives steadily, even if it is small, for He says in His Book, “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are few” (as conveyed in the prophetic tradition). Do not be like the one who starts a good deed and then abandons it out of stinginess or worldly fear. Instead, be generous with your wealth, your time, and your kindness—not for praise, but for the pleasure of your Lord. For every act of giving, no matter how small, is a seed that Allah multiplies beyond your imagination. And remember: the one who withholds out of miserliness only deprives himself of immense reward, while the one who gives sincerely finds that Allah never lets his effort go to waste. Open your heart, trust in Allah’s promise, and let your giving be a reflection of your faith—steady, sincere, and ever-flowing.
