Surah Al-Waqi'ah — Verse 85

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse comes in the midst of a powerful scene describing the moment of death, when the soul reaches the throat of the dying person. Allah challenges humanity: you are present, watching your loved one struggle in their final moments, yet you are utterly powerless to hold back their soul or return it to their body. You cannot delay death by even a blink of an eye.

Then comes the profound declaration: "And We are closer to him than you, but you do not see." This means that Allah's knowledge, power, and decree encompass the dying person completely — closer than any relative, any doctor, any loved one standing by the bedside. Moreover, His angels — the angels of mercy or punishment — are present at that very moment, surrounding the dying soul, ready to take it as commanded. But human eyes cannot perceive these unseen realities; they are veiled from the physical senses.

This verse reminds us of a fundamental truth: our perception is limited. We see only the surface of things, while the deeper reality is far greater. At the moment of death, while we see only a body struggling, the unseen world is fully active — angels descending, souls being drawn, and the decree of Allah unfolding with perfect precision.
