Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "An lā yadkhulannahā" – "That no one should enter it" – an emphatic oath-like expression conveying a firm, determined resolve.
- "al-yawma" – "today" – referring to the specific morning they planned to harvest.
- "miskīn" – "a poor person" – one in need, specifically the needy who relied on charity from the garden owners.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah narrates the secret conversation among the owners of the garden who had decided to withhold its fruits from the poor. After waking up early with a stingy and selfish intention, they urged one another with intense determination: "Do not let a single needy person enter the garden today." Their words reflect a hardened heart and a miserly spirit, as they sought to exclude the poor entirely from the blessings Allah had given them. This was not merely a casual remark but a solemn pact among themselves, emphasizing their greed and their deliberate choice to turn away from charity and kindness. They imagined that by doing so, they could keep all the produce for themselves, unaware that Allah sees all intentions and that His decree would soon overturn their plans.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder how swiftly the owners of the garden were tested by their own greed. They planned to deprive the needy, yet it was they who were deprived of the very harvest they guarded so jealously. This story is a timeless lesson for every believer: wealth and provision are trusts from Allah, and within them lies a right for the poor and the deprived. When we open our hands to give, Allah opens His gates of mercy and increase; when we close them in stinginess, we only shut ourselves out from His blessings. Let this verse inspire you to be generous, to see the needy as a means of purification for your wealth, and to remember that true success lies not in hoarding, but in sharing. Embrace the beauty of Islam, which elevates the giver above the taker and promises abundant reward for every act of kindness. May Allah soften our hearts, make us among those who give freely, and protect us from the fate of those who turned away from His mercy.
