Word Meanings:
- Wa humilati — and were lifted up / raised from their places.
- Al-ardu wal-jibalu — the earth and the mountains.
- Fa dukkata — so they were crushed, pounded, and shattered.
- Dakkan wahidah — a single crushing blow, one that is not repeated because of its extreme severity.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah Almighty describes a scene of immense cosmic upheaval that will occur when the Trumpet is blown for the first time — the blast that brings destruction upon this world. On that day, the earth and the mountains will be lifted up from their foundations, torn away from their places entirely. Then, in a single, overwhelming stroke, they will be crushed and pounded into dust — a crushing so severe and so complete that it will not need to be repeated. The mountains, once firm and towering, and the earth, once vast and stable, will both be reduced to scattered particles in an instant. This is not a gradual process; it is one decisive, catastrophic event that marks the end of this worldly life and the beginning of the Hereafter. The verse emphasizes the absolute power of Allah over His creation — nothing, no matter how massive or solid, can withstand His command. This scene serves as a profound reminder that the world we cling to, with all its apparent permanence and strength, is utterly fragile before the will of its Creator. When Allah decrees the end, the most solid structures of the universe will crumble like dry leaves in a storm. For the believer, this is a call to detach the heart from the fleeting comforts of this world and to prepare for the meeting with Allah — for that day is certain, and its arrival is closer than we imagine. Let this verse awaken in you a sense of awe for Allah’s majesty and a sincere urgency to turn back to Him in repentance and good deeds before that single, earth-shattering blow comes to pass.
