Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Baqiyah" (باقية): A remaining soul, remnant, or survivor. It signifies any person or being that continues to exist after destruction.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After describing the fate of the nations of Thamud and ‘Ad, Allah poses a rhetorical question to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and to all who hear this message: "Do you see any remnant of them?" The answer is self-evident—none remain. Thamud was destroyed by a mighty, overwhelming cry that exceeded all bounds in its intensity, while ‘Ad was annihilated by a bitterly cold, furious wind that Allah unleashed upon them for seven nights and eight consecutive days, without pause or respite. Their bodies lay scattered like hollow, decayed trunks of palm trees—lifeless, empty shells. Not a single soul survived to tell their tale or continue their lineage.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder of Allah’s absolute power and the certainty of His justice. The question is not asked to seek information, but to stir the conscience and awaken the heart. It invites the reader to reflect: where are those who once boasted of their strength, their wealth, and their numbers? They are gone, as if they had never existed. Their palaces crumbled, their voices fell silent, and their names became a lesson for those who come after.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ponder this scene. The nations of old were far mightier than us in physical power, yet they could not escape Allah’s decree when they rejected His messengers and persisted in arrogance. If you see yourself strong today, remember that true strength lies in submission to the Creator. If you see yourself weak, know that His mercy is vast for those who turn to Him in sincerity. The Qur’an does not narrate these stories merely to inform—it narrates them to transform. Let the fate of these nations be a mirror for your own soul: Will you be among those who heed the warning, or among those who are swept away? The door of repentance is open, and Allah’s mercy is nearer than your own jugular vein. Do not wait until the cry comes, for then no remnant will remain—but today, you can be among the survivors of His mercy.
