Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • السَّحَرَةُ (As-Saharah): The magicians/sorcerers.
  • فِرْعَوْنَ (Fir'awn): Pharaoh, the tyrant ruler of Egypt.
  • أَجْرًا (Ajran): A reward, compensation, or bounty (here, meaning a material prize or payment).
  • الْغَالِبِينَ (Al-Ghalibin): The victors, those who overcome and triumph.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Pharaoh’s messengers gathered the most skilled magicians from across his lands, they came before him with a bold and worldly demand. They did not come with faith or humility, but with a transactional mindset—seeking a guaranteed payment for their craft. They said: "Indeed, we will have a reward if we are the victors over Musa (Moses)." Their words reveal their arrogance and their complete reliance on material gain, unaware that the battle they were about to enter was not one of magic versus magic, but of falsehood versus the truth of Allah. They thought they could defeat the prophet of Allah with their illusions, and they demanded their price upfront—showing how the enemies of truth are often driven by greed and self-interest, while the prophets and their followers are driven by sincerity and devotion to Allah alone.

This scene is a powerful reminder that worldly rewards and fleeting gains are nothing compared to the eternal reward that Allah has prepared for those who believe and stand firm in His cause. The magicians were so confident in their tricks, yet Allah was about to turn their victory into a humiliating defeat, and their hearts would be transformed from seeking Pharaoh’s gold to seeking the pleasure of their Lord. Indeed, when the truth is manifested, all falsehood vanishes, and those who once sold their skills for a worldly prize will find the true treasure of faith.

Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this moment: these magicians were experts in their field, yet they were blind to the greater reality. When you face challenges in life, do you negotiate with Allah for a reward before you act, or do you trust that He will grant you the best in this world and the Hereafter? The believer does not bargain with Allah; rather, he submits wholeheartedly, knowing that Allah’s reward is far greater than any treasure Pharaoh could offer. Let this story inspire you to be among those who seek the pleasure of Allah above all else, for He is the Best of Providers and the Most Generous of Givers. And remember, when the truth of Allah is revealed, every falsehood—no matter how skilled or powerful—will crumble into nothing.
