Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Mubar (مُتَبَّرٌ): Destroyed, ruined, or brought to nothing.
- Ma hum fihi (مَّا هُمْ فِيهِ): What they are engaged in — i.e., their polytheism and false worship.
- Baatil (بَاطِلٌ): False, vain, or null — having no truth or lasting value.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah — the Most High — tells His Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) about the people who were worshipping idols, and through this, He teaches us a timeless lesson about the fate of falsehood. Allah says: "Indeed, these [people] — destroyed is what they are in, and worthless is what they used to do."
The meaning is that the polytheists who persist in worshipping idols and false deities are heading toward utter ruin. Their entire system of belief — the shirk (associating partners with Allah) they cling to — is doomed to destruction. It will not benefit them in the least, and it will not save them from Allah's punishment when it descends upon them. Moreover, all their deeds — even those they consider good or righteous — are rendered null and void because they are built upon the corrupt foundation of associating others with Allah. When the foundation is rotten, the entire building collapses.
This verse carries a profound message for every believer: that falsehood, no matter how grand or established it appears, is inherently fragile and temporary. It will inevitably perish, while truth — the worship of Allah alone — is what endures. The idols of this world — whether they are statues, wealth, power, status, or desires — are all destined for destruction. Only Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, remains forever.
Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful truth: your deeds are only as valuable as your intention and your belief. When you purify your faith and direct your worship to Allah alone, every good action you perform becomes a treasure that will meet you on the Day of Judgment. But when faith is corrupted by shirk, even the most impressive deeds become scattered dust.
So hold fast to the pure monotheism that all the prophets — from Noah to Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — came with. Let your heart be free from the worship of anything other than Allah. For the One who created you, sustains you, and will judge you is the only One worthy of your devotion. And in His worship lies your true success, your lasting peace, and your eternal salvation.
