Word Meanings:

  • "Min bayni aydihim" — from before them, meaning from the direction of the Hereafter and what lies ahead.
  • "Min khalfihim" — from behind them, meaning from the direction of worldly life and its temptations.
  • "An aymanihim" — from their right sides, meaning the paths of good deeds and righteousness.
  • "An shama'ilhim" — from their left sides, meaning the paths of evil and sin.
  • "Shakirin" — grateful, thankful, and by extension, believers who acknowledge Allah's blessings.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the accursed Iblis (Satan) continues his arrogant declaration before Allah after being granted respite until the Day of Resurrection. Having already vowed to mislead Adam's descendants, he now specifies his strategy with terrifying precision: "Then I will surely come to them from before them and from behind them, and from their right and from their left."

This means Satan will attack humanity from every possible direction and angle. From before them, he will cast doubts about the Hereafter, making people skeptical of resurrection, judgment, and eternal reward or punishment. From behind them, he will beautify worldly life, making them forget their ultimate purpose and cling desperately to temporary pleasures. From their right side, he will try to corrupt their good deeds — making them proud of their worship, or distracting them from sincere devotion through show-off and hypocrisy. From their left side, he will allure them toward sins, making disobedience seem attractive and desirable.

Satan's methods are numerous: he plants doubts, decorates falsehood, inflames desires, and whispers procrastination. He tells people, "You can repent later," or "God is forgiving anyway," or "Everyone does it." He makes virtue seem heavy and sin seem light. He attacks through fear, greed, anger, and lust. He exploits every weakness and every moment of heedlessness.

Then Iblis concludes with his wicked prediction: "And You will not find most of them grateful." He knew that the majority of mankind would not be truly thankful to their Lord — not in their hearts, not on their tongues, and not through their actions. And indeed, his assumption proved correct, as Allah states elsewhere: "And Iblis certainly proved true his assumption about them, so they followed him, except for a group of believers" (Saba: 20).

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse is a wake-up call for every believer. The enemy has openly declared his strategy — he will attack you from every side. So how can you remain careless? How can you sleep while an enemy as cunning as Iblis is plotting against you day and night?

But take heart, dear reader — Allah has not left you defenseless. He has given you the Qur'an as a shield, the Sunnah as a guide, and the power of sincere supplication. He has promised that Satan has no authority over His sincere servants. The more you remember Allah, the weaker Satan's whispers become. The more you seek knowledge, the harder it is for him to deceive you. The more you surround yourself with righteous company, the fewer openings he finds.

So be among the grateful — those who thank Allah with their hearts by recognizing His blessings, with their tongues by praising Him, and with their limbs by obeying Him. Be among the few who prove Iblis wrong. Let your life be a testimony that gratitude to Allah is possible, that faith overcomes whispers, and that the believer's light extinguishes the devil's fire.

And remember: every time you choose obedience over sin, every time you resist a temptation, every time you turn back to Allah after a slip — you are defeating the ancient enemy. You are fulfilling your purpose. You are becoming one of the grateful.
