Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Aghwaytani" (أغويتني): You caused me to go astray, to fall into misguidance and ruin. It stems from *ghayy* (غيّ), which means error, loss, and deviation from the truth.
- "La aq'udanna" (لأقعدن): I will surely sit/lie in wait — an emphatic oath indicating determination and persistence.
- "Siratakal mustaqeem" (صراطك المستقيم): Your straight path — the path of Islam, true guidance, and all that leads to Allah's pleasure.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Allah expelled Iblis from His mercy for his arrogance and refusal to prostrate to Adam, Iblis — cursed be he — responded not with repentance, but with defiance. He said: "Because You have caused me to fall into misguidance and ruin, I swear I will lie in wait for the children of Adam on Your straight path — the path of Islam and righteousness — to block them from it, to make it appear crooked to them, and to turn them away from the faith that You have ingrained in their nature."
This is an oath of vengeance. Iblis admits that his deviation is a result of Allah's decree and will, yet he uses this as an excuse to wage war against humanity. He vows to sit at the crossroads of guidance — at the very gates of truth — to intercept every soul that seeks to walk toward Allah. He will whisper doubts, beautify sins, delay repentance, and make obedience seem burdensome. His goal is to make the children of Adam fall as he fell, so that they share his ruin.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse reveals the open, declared enmity of Satan toward mankind. He does not hide his intentions — he has announced his strategy: to sit on the straight path and ambush every sincere heart. Yet, in the same breath, we must remember that Allah has not left us defenseless. He has given us the Qur'an, the Sunnah, the fitrah (natural disposition toward truth), and the constant opportunity for repentance. The very fact that Iblis must "sit in wait" means he cannot force anyone — he can only whisper and deceive. The choice remains ours.
So, dear believer, when you feel the pull of sin or the heaviness of worship, know that this is the ambush your enemy promised. Do not let his whispers discourage you. Every step you take toward Allah is a victory over that cursed oath. And know that Allah's mercy is far greater than Satan's cunning — for every time you repent sincerely, you frustrate the enemy's plan and draw closer to the One who created you out of love. Let this verse ignite in you a determination to walk the straight path with courage, knowing that your Lord is with you, and His help is near.
