Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْا فِيهَا — "As if they had never dwelt therein": The verb *yagh naw* (يَغْنَوْا) comes from *ghaniya* (غَنِيَ), meaning to reside or dwell in a place. The noun *maghānī* (مَغَانِي) refers to dwellings or homes. So the phrase paints a picture of complete annihilation — as though they had never even lived there at all.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Imagine a thriving community, with homes, markets, and families — then, in a single moment, all of it is wiped away. The people of Madyan, who rejected the Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him), were struck by a devastating punishment that eradicated them entirely. Their houses stood empty, their wealth turned to ruin, and their very existence became as if it had never been. This is the meaning of the verse: those who denied Shu'ayb became like people who had never lived in their land at all — no trace, no legacy, no memory of prosperity.
The verse then delivers a powerful verdict: "Those who denied Shu'ayb — they were the true losers." This is a direct refutation of the arrogant claim the disbelievers had made earlier. When Shu'ayb and his followers warned them of punishment, the disbelievers sneered and said, "If you follow Shu'ayb, you will surely be the losers" (7:90). But the tables turned completely. It was not the believers who lost — it was the deniers themselves. They lost their homes, their wealth, their lives, and most tragically, their eternal salvation. They lost in this world through destruction, and in the Hereafter through everlasting punishment.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every generation. It reminds us that material prosperity, social status, and worldly comforts are no guarantee of success. What truly matters is our relationship with Allah and His messengers. Those who reject the truth may appear strong and secure for a time, but their end is humiliation and loss. Meanwhile, the believers — even if they seem weak or few — are the true winners, for they have Allah's protection and the promise of Paradise.
Let this be a call to reflect on our own lives. Are we building our lives on the solid foundation of faith, or on the shifting sands of worldly desires? The story of Shu'ayb's people is not just history — it is a timeless warning that no one, no matter how powerful, can escape the justice of Allah. And it is a source of hope for the believers: no matter how difficult the circumstances, the final victory belongs to those who trust in Allah and follow His guidance.
