Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الرَّجْفَةُ (Ar-Rajfah): A severe earthquake or violent tremor that shakes the earth and everything upon it.
- جَاثِمِينَ (Jāthimīn): Lying dead, fallen prostrate on their knees and faces, motionless and lifeless in their homes.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the people of Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) persisted in their arrogance, rejected the truth, and mocked the message of their prophet, the punishment of Allah overtook them suddenly. A mighty earthquake seized them—a violent tremor that shook the very ground beneath their feet. The earth convulsed with such force that it threw them down, and by morning they lay dead in their own homes, fallen upon their knees and faces, lifeless and motionless. Their wealth, their strength, and their numbers could not protect them from the decree of Allah. In a single moment, the proud and defiant community was reduced to silent corpses, their homes becoming their graves. This was the fate of those who denied the signs of Allah and persisted in corruption upon the earth.
Reflection and Da'wah:
This scene from the history of past nations is not merely a story—it is a living lesson for every generation. The people of Shu'ayb were not weak or insignificant; they were a prosperous people who enjoyed comfort and security. Yet when they rejected the truth and continued their corrupt practices—cheating in trade, spreading mischief, and threatening the believers—Allah's punishment came to them in a way they could never have imagined.
How many people today feel utterly secure in their homes, their jobs, and their families, never pausing to consider that the same power that destroyed the nations of old is fully capable of doing the same today? The earth that we walk upon is submissive to its Lord, and when He commands it, it will shake and swallow whatever He wills.
Dear reader, do not let the delay of punishment deceive you. Allah is patient, but when His decree comes, no power can repel it. The story of Shu'ayb's people is a call to reflect: where do you stand with the message of truth? Do you accept it with humility, or do you turn away with arrogance? The choice is yours, but the outcome is certain—success and honor belong to those who submit to Allah, while humiliation and ruin await those who persist in defiance. Turn to your Lord before the tremor comes, and let your heart be soft and obedient, so that you may be among those who are saved, not among those who are jāthimīn.
