Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Phrases:

  • Nafs (نَفْسٌ): Soul, self, or every individual person.
  • Qaddamat (قَدَّمَتْ): What one has sent forth — i.e., the deeds and actions performed during one's lifetime.
  • Akharat (أَخَّرَتْ): What one has left behind or deferred — i.e., deeds that were not done, or the lasting consequences and legacy (both good and bad) that outlive a person.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day when the heavens are torn apart, the stars are scattered, the seas are burst forth, and the graves are overturned — at that very moment, every single soul will come to know, with absolute and undeniable certainty, exactly what it has sent forward and what it has left behind.

This means that every person will see, in full clarity, the good deeds they performed — their prayers, their charity, their kindness, their patience — and likewise, the sins and misdeeds they committed. They will also see the deeds they neglected and failed to do, the opportunities for goodness they let slip away, and the legacy they left behind — whether it be a righteous example that continues to inspire good, or a harmful influence that continues to spread evil after their death.

Nothing will remain hidden. Every action, every word, every intention — all of it will be laid bare before the soul's very eyes. This is not a day of guesswork or uncertainty; it is a day of perfect, piercing knowledge. The soul will realize, in that moment, that it was never truly alone, and that every single moment of its life was being recorded and preserved.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and reflect: What have you sent forward for that Day? What deeds are you preparing today that will greet you with joy or with regret? This verse is not meant to frighten you into despair, but to awaken you into action. Every breath you take is an opportunity to add to your record of goodness — a kind word, a helping hand, a sincere prayer, a step toward knowledge, a moment of forgiveness.

The One who created you, who knows the whisper of your heart, has promised that not even an atom's weight of good will be lost. So race toward what pleases Him, and let your legacy be one that continues to benefit you long after you leave this world. For on that Day, when every soul sees what it has done, the wise one will be the one who prepared well — and the fortunate one will be the one who meets their Lord with a heart full of faith and a record full of righteousness.

📜 Verse 3-7 — Al-Infitar

And when the seas are erupted
And when the [contents of] graves are scattered,
A soul will [then] know what it has put forth and kept back.
O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous,
Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?
