Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Wa adhinat" (وَأَذِنَتْ): Listened and responded in obedience; submitted willingly to the command of its Lord.
  • "Li Rabbiha" (لِرَبِّهَا): To its Lord, the Creator and Sustainer who governs all affairs.
  • "Wa huqqat" (وَحُقَّتْ): And it is rightfully due to it; it was fitting and proper for it to obey.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On the Day of Judgment, the heavens will be commanded to split open and tear apart, and they will respond to their Lord's command in perfect submission and obedience. This is not a forced or reluctant compliance, but a willing and natural response, because the heavens recognize their Lord's absolute authority and wisdom. It is entirely fitting and right that they should obey Him, for He is their Creator and Sustainer, and His command is always just and true. Similarly, the earth will be stretched out and flattened, its mountains will be crushed to dust, and it will cast out all the dead buried within it, emptying itself of them. The earth, too, will listen to its Lord and submit to His command, and this submission is rightfully due to Him. The verse emphasizes that all of creation—whether the vast heavens above or the solid earth beneath—is fully obedient to Allah's will, and this obedience is not only natural but also the proper and rightful response to His majesty and power.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse invites us to reflect on the profound order and submission that permeates the entire universe. The heavens and the earth, in all their grandeur and immensity, obey their Lord without hesitation or question. How then, O human being, can you—who are but a small part of this creation—turn away from the command of your Creator? If the mighty sky splits open in obedience, and the solid earth stretches and empties itself in submission, then your heart, which is far smaller and softer, should be even more ready to submit to Allah's guidance. Let this scene on the Day of Judgment be a reminder to you today: just as the heavens and the earth will respond to their Lord when He calls them, so too should you respond to His call in this life—through prayer, repentance, and righteous deeds. The One who commands the heavens and the earth is the same One who commands you to believe, to worship, and to do good. His command is always for your benefit, and His wisdom is beyond all comprehension. So hasten to obey Him now, before that Day arrives when every soul will see the consequences of its actions, and when the heavens and the earth themselves will bear witness to the truth of His promise.
