Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Yuḥyī (يُحْيِي): He gives life — He brings the dead to life and creates life from nothing.
- Yumīt (يُمِيتُ): He causes death — He takes life away from the living.
- Turjaʿūn (تُرْجَعُونَ): You will be returned — you will be brought back to Him, referring to the Day of Resurrection.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a profound declaration of Allah’s absolute power and sovereignty over all existence. Allah alone is the One who gives life — He creates every living being from nothing, and He alone sustains that life. And He alone causes death — when His appointed time for a soul arrives, no force in the heavens or the earth can delay or prevent it. This is not a random or meaningless cycle; rather, it is a deliberate and purposeful system established by the All-Wise.
The verse then concludes with a truth that should fill every heart with both hope and accountability: "And to Him you will be returned." This means that after death, every single soul — from the first human to the last — will be resurrected and gathered before Allah on the Day of Judgment. He will then judge each person with perfect justice: the righteous will be rewarded with eternal bliss in Paradise, and the wicked will face the consequences of their deeds in Hell.
This return is not a matter of chance or speculation; it is a certainty that Allah has promised, and His promise is true. Just as He created you the first time with ease, He is fully capable of bringing you back to life after death. The One who gave you life and causes your death is the very One who will resurrect you — nothing is difficult for Him.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse. Your life is not a random accident, and your death is not an end. You are on a journey — a journey that began in this world and will continue into the Hereafter. Every breath you take is a gift from Allah, and every moment is an opportunity to prepare for your return to Him.
Do not let the distractions of this world make you forget your ultimate destination. The One who created you, who sustains you, and who will cause your death is the same One who will welcome you back — either with His mercy and forgiveness, or with His justice. Turn to Him now, before that inevitable return. Seek His guidance, repent for your shortcomings, and strive to live a life that pleases Him. For on that Day, when you stand before your Lord, nothing will matter except your deeds and your faith.
This is the beauty of Islam: it gives you clarity about your purpose, hope in your Lord’s mercy, and a constant reminder that this life is but a fleeting moment compared to the eternal life that awaits. Embrace this truth, and let it transform your heart and your actions. Allah is the Most Merciful, and He loves those who turn to Him.
