Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- خَسِرُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ (Khasirū anfusahum): They have lost their own selves — meaning they have brought ruin and destruction upon their souls through their own actions.
- ضَلَّ (Dalla): It vanished, disappeared, or went astray from them — meaning it became completely lost and inaccessible to them.
- يَفْتَرُونَ (Yaftarūn): They used to fabricate or invent — referring to the false claims and lies they concocted about their false deities and intercessors.
Explanation of the Verse:
These are the people who have truly lost themselves — they have traded away their own souls and brought upon themselves utter ruin and destruction. By associating partners with Allah and worshipping false deities, they have led their own selves down the path of eternal loss and perdition. They have exchanged the worship of the One True God for the worship of idols and fabricated beings, and in doing so, they have squandered the very purpose of their existence.
And everything they used to invent and fabricate — their false claims that these idols and so-called intercessors would benefit them or intercede on their behalf — has completely vanished from them. At the moment when they need these false deities the most, in the Hereafter, they will find that all their illusions have evaporated into nothingness. The very things they relied upon, the partners they ascribed to Allah, and the hopes they placed in their fabricated intercessors will all disappear, leaving them with nothing but regret, loss, and despair.
This verse paints a vivid picture of the ultimate disappointment that awaits those who reject the truth and invent falsehoods about Allah. They invested their lives, their efforts, and their very souls in a delusion — and when the truth of the Hereafter unfolds, they will find that their entire investment was in vain.
A Call to Reflection and Guidance:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the profound lesson in this verse. How often do we, as human beings, place our hopes and trust in things that cannot benefit us? How often do we chase after illusions — wealth, status, false deities, or even our own desires — only to find that they abandon us when we need them most?
The beauty of Islam is that it calls us back to the One who never abandons us — Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. He has sent us the Qur'an and the Sunnah as a guiding light, so that we may never lose ourselves as those before us did. He has given us the opportunity, right now, to turn back to Him, to purify our worship, and to place our complete trust in Him alone.
Do not let your soul be among those that are lost. Every breath you take is an opportunity to draw closer to your Creator, to seek His forgiveness, and to secure your success in this life and the next. The doors of repentance are wide open — Allah Himself calls out to His servants, saying, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53).
So seize this moment. Turn to Allah with a sincere heart, and you will find that He is the best of protectors and the most generous of providers. Do not let the illusions of this world deceive you — for they will vanish, but the mercy and reward of Allah endure forever.
