Word Meanings:
- Yā Iblīs (O Iblis): A direct address to Satan, calling him by his name after his refusal.
- Mā laka (What is the matter with you): An expression of rebuke and inquiry, asking what prevented or hindered him.
- Allā takūna (That you are not): Refers to his failure to join in the act.
- Maʿa as-sājidīn (With those who prostrate): Among the angels who obeyed Allah's command to prostrate to Adam.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Iblis refused to prostrate to Adam out of arrogance and pride, Allah—the Most High—addressed him directly with a question that carries both reproach and severity: "O Iblis, what is the matter with you that you are not with those who prostrate?" This is not a question seeking information, for Allah knows all things. Rather, it is a rebuke meant to expose Iblis's defiance and to make him confront his own disobedience. Allah is asking: What prevented you from joining the angels in their obedience? What stopped you from submitting to My command, while all others complied willingly and humbly? The question highlights the contrast between the angels' immediate submission and Iblis's stubborn refusal, making his sin even more evident and blameworthy.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about humility and obedience. When Allah commands us, there is no room for arrogance or personal opinion that contradicts His order. The angels—despite their high rank and closeness to Allah—prostrated without hesitation, while Iblis let his pride lead him to ruin. Dear reader, let this be a reminder for you: whenever Allah's command comes, respond with swift submission, for true honor lies in humility before the Almighty. Do not let your ego stand between you and your Lord, for the path of obedience is the path of success in this life and the Hereafter. And know that Allah's question to Iblis is a warning to all who follow his footsteps—that no excuse, no status, and no pride will save them from accountability.
