Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Iblis — The proper name of Satan (Shaytan), given before his fall from grace.
  • Aba — He refused, rejected, and turned away with arrogance, not merely hesitating but deliberately and stubbornly declining.
  • Ma'a as-sajidin — "With those who prostrated," meaning to join the angels in their act of obedience to Allah's command.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam out of honor and respect, all of them — every single one — complied without exception. They submitted fully to their Lord's command, demonstrating their complete obedience and devotion. However, Iblis stood apart. He refused to prostrate with the angels, and his refusal was not born of confusion or oversight, but of deliberate arrogance and defiance. He was present among the angels and had been worshipping alongside them, yet when the command came, his pride overtook him, and he chose to disobey rather than submit.

This verse highlights a profound truth: Iblis was not one of the angels by nature, but he had been in their company, and his disobedience revealed what was hidden in his heart — arrogance and rebellion. His refusal was a direct contradiction of Allah's explicit order, and it marked the beginning of his enmity toward humanity.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. The entire creation of angels bowed in humble obedience to their Creator, yet one being allowed his pride to lead him to ruin. How often do we, too, let our egos stand in the way of submitting to Allah's commands? The lesson here is timeless: obedience to Allah brings honor, while arrogance leads to disgrace. Let this verse be a reminder that true success lies in humbling ourselves before our Lord, just as the angels did, and in guarding our hearts against the whispers of pride that can turn us away from the straight path. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is always open — so let us hasten to obey Him before it is too late, and let us never follow the footsteps of Iblis, whose pride became his eternal loss.

📜 Verse 29-33 — Al-Hijr

And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."
So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,
Except Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated.
[Allah] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"
He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud."
