Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āl Lūṭ (آلَ لُوطٍ): The family and followers of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) — specifically those who believed in him and his message.
- Lamunajjūhum (لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ): We will surely save and deliver them.
- Ajmaʿīn (أَجْمَعِينَ): All of them, without exception.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, the angels — who had come to Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) in the form of handsome young men — clarify the divine decree they were sent to execute. They say: "Except the family of Lot — indeed, We will surely save them all." This is a specific exception from the destruction that was destined for the wicked people of Lot's town. The people of that town were steeped in corruption and sin, but the household of Lot — those who believed in him and followed his guidance — were to be spared from the punishment that would strike the transgressors.
The exception here is *munqaṭiʿ* (disconnected), meaning it excludes a group that was not part of the original description of the "criminal people." The people of the town were described as criminals, but the family of Lot had not committed such crimes; they were believers, pure in their devotion to Allah. Thus, Allah's mercy singled them out for salvation. However, as mentioned in other verses, Lot's wife was not among the saved because she did not believe in her heart — she sided with the disbelievers, and so she was included in the punishment.
This verse carries a profound lesson: Allah's mercy is vast, and His protection is granted to those who remain steadfast in faith, even when surrounded by corruption. The salvation of Lot's family was not due to their lineage alone, but due to their belief and righteousness. It reminds us that no matter how dark the environment around us becomes, Allah can deliver His sincere servants from the midst of destruction.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how Allah distinguishes between the guilty and the innocent, between the believers and the transgressors. He does not let the righteous perish with the wicked. This is a source of hope for every believer who feels overwhelmed by the sins of society around them. Hold firm to your faith, for Allah's promise of salvation is true. Just as He saved the family of Lot from a town that was overturned, He can save you from every trial and tribulation — whether in this world or the Hereafter. The door of His mercy is always open; turn to Him sincerely, and you will find Him the Best of Protectors.
