Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- نَرِثُ الْأَرْضَ (We inherit the earth): We remain after the destruction of all creation, and the earth returns to Our sole ownership.
- وَمَنْ عَلَيْهَا (and whoever is upon it): All creatures — humans, jinn, animals — will perish, and only Allah will remain.
- وَإِلَيْنَا يُرْجَعُونَ (and to Us they will be returned): Their final destination is to Allah alone, for reckoning and recompense.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse delivers a profound and awe-inspiring truth: Allah alone is the Ever-Living, the Eternal, and the Sole Inheritor of all that exists. He declares, "Indeed, it is We who inherit the earth and whoever is upon it" — meaning that every soul that walks this earth, every being that inhabits it, will one day vanish, while Allah remains forever, unchanging and everlasting. The earth and all its treasures, kingdoms, and inhabitants will ultimately return to Him, for He is the Owner of all dominion, and His decree over His creation is absolute.
The verse then seals this truth with a second, equally powerful statement: "And to Us they will be returned." This is not merely a declaration of destruction — it is a call to accountability. Every human being, from the first to the last, will be raised from their graves and gathered before their Lord for judgment. No deed, however small, will be lost; no soul will be wronged. The righteous will be rewarded with eternal bliss, and the wrongdoers will face the consequences of their actions.
This verse carries a dual message of warning and hope. It warns the heedless who are engrossed in the fleeting pleasures of this world, reminding them that their wealth, power, and youth will not last — all will be inherited by Allah, and they will stand before Him. At the same time, it comforts the believers who are oppressed or struggling, assuring them that the tyrants of this earth will not escape, and that ultimate justice lies with Allah, who never fails His promise.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this magnificent verse. The world you see around you — its mountains, oceans, cities, and all its inhabitants — is temporary. Every king will be dethroned by death, every rich person will leave their wealth behind, and every strong body will decay in the grave. Only Allah remains, and to Him is your return. This is not a message of despair, but of liberation: free yourself from the chains of materialism and worldly attachment, and turn to the One who never perishes. Submit to Him, worship Him, and live a life of righteousness, so that when you meet Him, you meet Him with a heart at peace. Islam calls you to this eternal success — will you answer the call?
