Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Afara'ayta" (أَفَرَأَيْتَ): "Have you seen?" or "Did you consider?" — an expression drawing attention to something astonishing and significant.
  • "Kafara" (كَفَرَ): Disbelieved, rejected, or covered the truth with ingratitude.
  • "Ayatina" (آيَاتِنَا): Our signs, proofs, and revelations.
  • "La'utayanna" (لَأُوتَيَنَّ): "I will surely be given" — an emphatic oath-like assertion of certainty about receiving something in the future.
  • "Malan wa walada" (مَالًا وَوَلَدًا): Wealth and children/offspring.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a rhetorical question meant to provoke reflection: "Have you considered, O Messenger, the case of the one who disbelieved in Our signs and yet boldly declared, 'I will surely be given wealth and children [in the Hereafter]'?"

The verse refers to a specific individual — Al-'As ibn Wa'il — and those who share his arrogant attitude. This man rejected the clear proofs of Allah's power, denied the reality of resurrection and the Day of Judgment, and mocked the very idea of accountability. In his arrogance, he claimed that even if he were to be resurrected after death, he would still be granted abundant wealth and many children in the afterlife — as if Allah's favors were his guaranteed right, regardless of his disbelief and disobedience.

The rhetorical style of the verse — "Have you seen?" — is designed to draw the listener's attention to the sheer absurdity of such a claim. It invites the believer to reflect: How can a person who rejects Allah's signs and lives in defiance of His commands expect to receive His bounties in the Hereafter? This is not merely ignorance; it is a profound delusion rooted in arrogance and a false sense of entitlement.

The verse also highlights a deeper spiritual malady: the tendency of some people to measure Allah's favor solely in terms of material wealth and offspring, while ignoring the true criteria of honor and success — namely, faith, righteousness, and obedience to Allah. Such people forget that the blessings of this world are not necessarily a sign of Allah's pleasure, and that the Hereafter is governed by justice, not by wishful thinking.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. It warns us against the arrogance of assuming that Allah's rewards are guaranteed to us without faith and good deeds. It also reminds us that true success lies not in accumulating wealth or children, but in submitting to Allah and living a life of righteousness.

How beautiful is the Quran in exposing the illusions of the human heart! It calls us to wake up from the delusion of worldly pride and to place our trust in Allah alone, knowing that His justice is perfect and His mercy is vast for those who believe and do good.

Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: Do you rely on your deeds and faith, or do you presume upon Allah's generosity while neglecting His commands? The doors of repentance and mercy are always open — so return to your Lord before the Day when no wealth or children will avail, and only a sound heart will bring salvation.

📜 Verse 75-79 — Maryam

Say, "Whoever is in error - let the Most Merciful extend for him an extension [in wealth and time] until, when they see that which they were promised - either punishment [in this world] or the Hour [of resurrection] - they will come to know who is worst in position and weaker in soldiers."
And Allah increases those who were guided, in guidance, and the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for recourse.
Then, have you seen he who disbelieved in Our verses and said, "I will surely be given wealth and children [in the next life]?"
Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken from the Most Merciful a promise?
No! We will record what he says and extend for him from the punishment extensively.
