Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Aṭṭalaʿa al-ghayb (أَطَّلَعَ الْغَيْبَ): Has he looked into the unseen, i.e., has he gained knowledge of the hidden realm, such as the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ)?
  • ʿAhd (عَهْدًا): A covenant, promise, or binding agreement.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a profound rhetorical question posed by Allah, rebuking the arrogant claims of a disbeliever who boasted that he would be given wealth and children in the Hereafter, and that he would be honored by Allah. The verse challenges such a person: "Has he peered into the unseen and seen his future, or has he made a covenant with the Most Merciful that guarantees him these things?"

The first part of the question—"Has he looked into the unseen?"—is a powerful denial. No human being has access to the knowledge of the unseen except what Allah reveals to His chosen messengers. The disbeliever has not seen the Preserved Tablet, nor has he been given any divine revelation. His claim is therefore baseless, built on nothing but wishful thinking and arrogance.

The second part—"Or has he taken a covenant with the Most Merciful?"—is equally dismissive. A covenant with Allah is not something to be taken lightly; it requires faith, obedience, and sincerity. The disbeliever has no such covenant. He has not submitted to Allah, nor has he followed His guidance. How then could he expect such favors?

This verse teaches us a vital lesson: no one can claim Allah’s favors in the Hereafter without faith and righteous deeds. It is not by empty claims or false hopes that one earns Allah’s pleasure, but by sincere belief, good actions, and reliance on His mercy. The verse also highlights Allah’s absolute knowledge and justice—He knows what is in the hearts, and He rewards only those who truly deserve it.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. Do not be like those who make grand claims about their standing with Allah while their hearts are far from Him. Instead, strive to build a genuine relationship with your Lord—through prayer, charity, patience, and gratitude. The path to Allah’s favor is open to all who seek it with sincerity, but it is not a path of empty words; it is a path of action, devotion, and love for the Most Merciful. Let your hope in Allah be accompanied by deeds that please Him, and let your faith be a light that guides you to His eternal reward.

📜 Verse 76-80 — Maryam

And Allah increases those who were guided, in guidance, and the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for recourse.
Then, have you seen he who disbelieved in Our verses and said, "I will surely be given wealth and children [in the next life]?"
Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken from the Most Merciful a promise?
No! We will record what he says and extend for him from the punishment extensively.
And We will inherit him [in] what he mentions, and he will come to Us alone.
