Word Meanings:

  • Kalimah (كَلِمَةٌ): A decree, word, or preordained judgment from Allah.
  • Sabqat (سَبَقَتْ): Had already preceded or been determined beforehand.
  • Lizāman (لِزَامًا): An inevitable, binding punishment that would have been inescapable.
  • Ajalun Musammā (أَجَلٌ مُسَمًّى): A specified, appointed term or time.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses the disbelievers who persistently rejected the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and demanded that punishment be hastened upon them as proof of the truth. Allah informs His Prophet that had it not been for a decree that had already been issued from His Lord, and had it not been for an appointed term that He has set, the punishment would have descended upon them immediately and unavoidably, for they fully deserve it due to their persistent disbelief and arrogance.

The "word" that preceded refers to Allah's eternal wisdom and decree that He does not punish any nation until the proof has been established upon them through the sending of messengers and the delivery of clear revelation. This is a manifestation of Allah's perfect justice — He does not destroy a people while they remain unaware or without having received guidance. The "appointed term" refers to the fixed time decreed for their punishment, whether in this world or on the Day of Resurrection, which cannot be advanced or delayed.

Thus, the verse reassures the believers that the delay in punishment is not a sign of neglect or weakness, but rather a reflection of divine mercy, patience, and wisdom. Allah gives people time to reflect, repent, and return to Him, while the ultimate justice is guaranteed at the appointed hour.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: Allah's mercy is vast, and His patience is immense. He does not rush to punish, even when we fall short or sin repeatedly. Every breath you take is an opportunity — a gift from your Lord — to turn back to Him, seek His forgiveness, and rectify your path. The fact that you are reading these words right now is evidence that Allah is giving you time, not because He is unaware of your actions, but because He loves for you to return to Him. Do not mistake His patience for indifference, for the appointed term is real and certain. Seize this moment, before the door of repentance closes, and let the mercy of your Lord draw you closer to Him. Indeed, Allah is Al-Ghafūr (The Most Forgiving) and Ar-Rahīm (The Most Merciful), and His door remains open until the final hour arrives.

📜 Verse 127-131 — Taha

And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.
Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, punishment would have been an obligation [due immediately], and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
