Word Meanings:

  • بِالْحَقِّ (with the truth): meaning with certainty, sincerity, and serious intent.
  • اللَّاعِبِينَ (those who play): meaning those who jest, mock, or speak without seriousness.

Explanation of the Verse:

When Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) delivered the message of pure monotheism to his people, calling them to worship Allah alone and abandon their idols, they responded with astonishment and denial. They said to him: "Have you truly come to us with the truth, or are you one of those who jest and play with words?" Their question carried a tone of mockery and rejection, as they found it inconceivable that a young man would challenge their ancestral religion and their revered idols. They could not accept that his call was serious, so they accused him of being a trifler who does not know what he says.

This verse reflects the common reaction of disbelievers throughout history when confronted with the truth: they either accuse the caller of falsehood or dismiss him as a joker. Yet, Ibrahim's response, which follows in the next verses, demonstrates his unwavering certainty and his ability to engage them with wisdom and clear evidence.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder how the people of Ibrahim reacted to the truth. They were so attached to their inherited falsehood that they could not even conceive of someone sincerely inviting them to something better. How often do we, too, dismiss the words of truth when they challenge our habits or comfort? The Quran calls us to open our hearts and minds, to distinguish between jest and seriousness, and to seek the truth with sincerity. When you hear the call of Allah, do not be like those who asked, "Are you joking?" Rather, be like Ibrahim, who stood firm with certainty, and be like those who respond to the truth with humility and acceptance. The truth is not a game; it is the path to eternal success.

They said, "We found our fathers worshippers of them."
He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error."
They said, "Have you come to us with truth, or are you of those who jest?"
He said, "[No], rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify.
And [I swear] by Allah, I will surely plan against your idols after you have turned and gone away."
