Key Words and Phrases:

  • بطشتم (Batashtum): You seized, struck, or attacked with force and violence.
  • جبّارين (Jabbareen): Tyrants, oppressors, those who act with brutal arrogance and cruelty, showing no mercy or compassion.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) continues to admonish the people of 'Ad, reminding them of their oppressive and tyrannical behavior. He says: "And when you seize or strike someone, you do so as tyrants — with absolute cruelty, without any mercy, compassion, or restraint."

The verse highlights two aspects of their evil conduct: first, their excessive and wasteful building of tall structures and fortresses as if they would live forever, and second, their brutal treatment of people. Whenever they laid their hands on anyone — whether by killing, beating, or punishing — they did so in a violent, arrogant, and oppressive manner. They showed no kindness, no pity, and no sense of justice. Their power was used only to harm and dominate others.

This is a profound lesson for all of humanity: power and strength are trusts from Allah, and they must be exercised with justice, mercy, and wisdom. The people of 'Ad were destroyed because they misused their strength and oppressed others, forgetting that a mightier Power — Allah — was watching them and would call them to account.

A Call to Reflection and Righteousness:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own conduct. How do you treat those who are weaker or under your authority? Do you use your position, wealth, or physical strength to help others or to harm them? Islam teaches us that the best among people are those who are most beneficial to others and most merciful in their dealings. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The merciful are shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth, and the One above the heavens will have mercy upon you."

Let this verse be a reminder that true strength lies not in tyranny, but in self-control, forgiveness, and justice. Allah loves those who are fair and compassionate, and He has promised great rewards for those who restrain their anger and pardon others. Embrace this beautiful teaching, and let it transform your character into one that reflects the mercy and justice of Allah — for that is the path to success in this life and the Hereafter.

Do you construct on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves,

And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally?

So fear Allah and obey me.
